The target population of the study comprised selected students from the University of Lagos, Lagos State, Nigeria. The questionnaire administered was three hundred and ten (310) copies and three hundred copies (300) retrieved which constitute the sample size. The descriptive and analytical approach was adopted using Chi-square to test and analyse the hypotheses earlier stated. The result revealed that there is a significant impact of social media on academic achievement of computer science students in Nigeria. The finding of the study also reveals that provision of study related information is one of the importance of social media in promoting academic achievement among computer science students in Nigeria. The findings of the study also reveal that there is a significant relationship between social media and academic achievement of computer science students in Nigeria. The finding of the study also reveals that social media bridge the relationship among students which allow them to study together without having to meet physically that lead to a positive academic achievement. The findings of the study reveal that whatsApp is one of the social media sites that computer science students had access to which help to promote academic achievement among computer science students. It was therefore concluded that social media significantly have impact on the academic achievement of computer science students in Nigeria. It was recommended that Guidance and counseling units of the higher institutions should be charged with the duty of sanitizing the youth or students on the best productive ways to use social media.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Millions of systems located in different locations throughout several nations, belonging to thousands of corporations, governments, research institutions, educational institutions, and other organizations, may now connect to one another thanks to the internet. It offers a very rich platform for information sharing, trading, and cooperative engagement between people and machines that disregards physical limitations of space (Ugwulebo& Okoro, 2016). The practice of social networking has gained popularity on a global scale and is now practiced practically everywhere.

The use of social media sites has increased, transforming them into a platform where users can produce, share, bookmark, and network material at an incredible rate. Social media is rapidly altering societal discourse due to its accessibility, speed, and reach as well as setting trends and priorities in a variety of fields, including politics, technology, and the entertainment industry(Asur &Huberman, 2010).

The online world has changed tremendously in the last 10 years, because to the introduction of social media, young men and women today communicate thoughts, sentiments, personal information, images, and videos at an incredible rate. Social networking websites are currently used by 73% of wired American teenagers (Oberst, 2010). People all over the world are increasingly using social networking sites as a social norm and way of life. Particularly teenagers and young adults have embraced these websites as a means of connecting with their peers globally, exchanging information, reinventing themselves, and showcasing their social lives(Boyd, 2007). Social networking sites have grown in popularity among students as a result of technological advancements, and there is now considerable concern about the impact of undergraduate students' use of these sites on their academic achievement.

The regular usage of social media platforms like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Xanga, FriendSkier, and Whatsapp by high school and college students, as well as the potential impacts of those platforms on students and their academic achievement, have recently generated a lot of controversy. social media, particularly Facebook, which is the most popular social media platform for communication and information exploration. Everyone can see from this that using social media compulsively will negatively impact academic achievement (Nonis& Hudson, 2006).

Today's youth, particularly students, are more likely to utilize various technology. They often become weary of doing their schoolwork and studying their lectures, so instead of doing such things, they choose to go online and have fun. Students already "spend too little time learning" because of their hectic schedules, according to Nonis and Hudson (2006). Students who concentrate on social media may find that their course of study is neglected here at the chosen institution at University of Ilorin. A student will undoubtedly struggle to manage his academic achievement if he becomes addicted to Facebook and spends excessive amounts of time there.

In reality, there are a lot of stores outside the chosen institution's walls that are stocked with students from different departments. For students to manage and sustain their strong academic achievement, there needs to be a solution presented to the problem of social media addiction (Ohen&Bryer, 2012).

The use of social media by students is a very common problem that still requires independent observation and resolution by the students. Indeed, there is nothing wrong with using social media, but they must discipline themselves when using it. They must learn to think about their behavior before performing any actions.

Many students rely on the availability of information on social media in particular, and depending on how they utilize it, this might help or hurt their achievement. Social media really aids students in learning and remembering knowledge for those who multitask, which may improve grades. However, pupils who misuse it will see a drop in their marks.

Academic achievement also focuses on your having the proper mindset to improve your grades so you can study more efficiently. It is how students handle their academic work and how they handle or complete various assignments assigned to them by their professors. The term "interest-based communication" generally refers to communication that allows individuals and groups to interact, much like how the term "social media" has come to have a fairly broad meaning.Social media specifically refers to interactions between two or more people within a constrained system for the purposes of friendship, meeting new people, and/or exchanging information. It also refers to platforms that require users to create public or semi-public profile pages with information of their choosing in order to communicate with other users and to conduct searches for other users (Ziwey et al., 2011).

Since 2005, social media use has increased significantly. According to some estimates, 78% of students use social media daily. A more recent estimate shows that Facebook has over 750 million users worldwide, YouTube receives over 3 billion daily views, and Twitter has over 177 million daily tweets. In relation to this researcher's exploratory study, previous data shows that traditionally older higher education students, or those under 30, tend to use social media at the highest rate. These students' academic achievement, social media and academic achievement, and the question of whether social media improves students' academic achievement are frequently couched in more significant issues that are associated with social media use in general, such as its psychological effects and privacy and safety concerns Individual self-control and self-regulation issues, as well as issues with human adaptability (Roseriand, 2011). It was based on this background that the present study aims to examine the impact of social media on the academic achievement of Computer Science education students in Nigeria.

Statement of the Problem

The widespread use of mobile phones and the development of media technologies have significantly changed how people communicate on a daily basis. The popularity of social media among young people nowadays is expanding tremendously, especially among students. Due to their frequent participation in one activity or another on social media sites, many students develop addictions to their use. As social media usage becomes more widespread, there is growing worry about the potential effects it may have on students' academic achievement.Furthermore, it is impossible to overstate the growing importance of youth usage of social media. Social networking among students has grown increasingly common over time. It is a way to connect with friends outside of school as well as on campus.

The usage of technology, such as the internet, is one of the most significant elements that might have a favorable or negative impact on students' academic achievement, according to Jacobsen and Forste (2011). Many parents and guardians are concerned that teenagers are not spending enough time studying and are instead spending too much time on Facebook and other social media platforms. Many children still use social networking sites on a regular basis, despite the fact that parents are concerned about their frequent use. Previous studies were only interested on the general effect of social media on academic achievement among students without specifying the level of effect or a specific population. It is against this background that this research is being conducted to ascertain the impact of use of social media sites on academic achievement of Computer Science students in Nigeria.
