CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Social media involves practices that, by words, photographs and videos, include socializing and networking online. Kaplan and Haenlein (2010) defined social media as a category of internet-based applications that build on Web2.0's ideological and technical pillars and allow user-generated content to be produced and shared. The development of increasingly immersive channels in which people and groups share, co-create, debate and change user-generated content is dependent on mobile and web-based technologies. In line with this, Sherwin (2013) claimed that social media has introduced important and systemic shifts in corporate, group and individual contact. The new field of techno-self-study focuses on these shifts. The most distinctive facets of social media are that it has the power to turn from a way to drive material outward to a way to encourage discussion, share knowledge such as celebrity life styles of fashion music, etc, and evoke unprecedented human, industrial, societal, and even global changes. The high-speed broadband internet connectivity and the vast use of personal computers, tablets, e-readers, Twitter, Facebook, and smartphones helps millions of people to regularly participate in social networking, instant messages, content sharing, online learning, and many more.

The Internet has altered the way people communicate. It has been made simpler for correspondence and access to information. Internet use is also not only for email correspondence, it is now a medium on which individuals communicate. Today, when sitting somewhere in rural Kano, it is possible to attend a classroom being taught abroad or send testimony directly to a foreign court in real time without the need to fly, thanks to the internet. Kaplan and Haenlein (2010) state that the Internet is now all about blogs, podcasts, Facebook and Twitter tools and technologies, a new development also known as social networking sites. Social network sites are the web-based services that allow individuals to

(1) Construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system,

(2) Articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and

(3) View and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system (Boyd and Ellison, 2018).

In Nigeria, social networks are increasingly becoming a very common form of interpersonal and public contact. Social networking sites are new digital forms of communication in which people communicate, exchange thoughts, memories, photographs, messages, and fascinating knowledge with each other. Social networking sites are described by Boyd and Ellison (2018) as:' Web-based services that enable people to create a public or semi-public profile within a bounded framework articulate a list of other users with whom they share a link and access and traverse their list of contacts and those made within the system by others (pp.78-100.)They are interconnected networks that, through the instrumentality of the Internet and telecommunications gadgets, provide information and communication technology (ICTs) to modern society. The Internet allows networks to be extended and chances to connect with larger audiences across the globe to be improved. The digital media's immersive aura confers unparalleled popularity on them. Also the ubiquity of the social networking sites within their short period of arrival is unparalleled in the annals of media industry

Any organized report or news involving film stars, television personalities, recording artists, and other public figures, including items in which such stories appear, may be described as entertainment news. In covering news stories or incidents, "Journalism genres" refers to multiple fields, forms, or different genres in journalism. Entertainment is a category of operation that retains an audience's attention and curiosity, or brings enjoyment and delight. It may be a concept or a mission, but it is most likely to be one of the things or incidents that have progressed specifically over thousands of years in order to hold the interest of an audience. While different objects keep people's interest, and people have different entertainment tastes, most types are identifiable and familiar. Storytelling, music, drama, dance, and different kinds of performance exist in all cultures, were supported in royal courts, developed into sophisticated forms and over time became available to all citizens. In recent days, the process has been speeded up by an entertainment industry that records and sells entertainment goods. Entertainment evolves and can be tailored to accommodate any volume, ranging from a person who selects a private entertainment from a vast selection of pre-recorded items now; to a banquet adapted for two; to any size or sort of group, with suitable music and dance; to performances intended for thousands; and even to a global audience.

The experience of being entertained has been closely connected to humour, meaning that fun and happiness are one typical interpretation of the idea, while certain entertainments have a serious intent. In different types of ritual, celebration, religious festival, or satire, for instance, this may be the case. Therefore, there is the risk that what exists as entertainment will also be a way of comprehension or intellectual development. The viewer, which converts private recreation or recreational activities into entertainment, is a significant feature of entertainment. As in the case of people watching a performance, opera, television program, or film, the audience may have a passive role; or the audience role may be involved, as in the case of sports, where participant/audience roles may be regularly reversed

Social-interactive web media, more specifically social network sites, blogs, micro-blogs such as Twitter, video-sharing sites such as You Tube and public chat channels such as Facebook have increasingly become critical instruments in digital journalism for celebrity marketing and entertainment reporting. The use of social media tools for the processing and dissemination of entertainment news is growing. In the media industry in Nigeria, the use of these resources and technology faces major challenges and opportunities. This analysis therefore focuses on the Impact of social media on entertainment news.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

To relay entertainment news to the public, a broad variety of social media platforms are used. Journalism is undergoing a radical change and the changing existence of technology is one of the main factors cited for this transformation.Entertainment News is what it is made up by those who contribute to its development. Outside the newsroom, the social players participating in the development of entertainment news have grown and expanded to extend the locus of the output of entertainment news. Public feedback, social monitoring, are topics that have long since been commonly accepted features of local media in the world that are seldom connected to press hypotheses.Media convergence and the inclusion of social media platforms in the production and dissemination of entertainment news raise numerous problems and opportunities that need to be explored.Social networking networks have and continue to promote emerging media usage habits and shifts in media companies' business climate. Traditional newspapers lack interactivity and involvement in the selection and dissemination of entertainment news and the adoption of social networking platforms has changed the media environment. This study seeks to investigate the impact of social media on entertainment news.
